1900s Strand Antique Touring Skis with Bear Trap and Leather Bindings 1900's Strand Antique Touring Skis

1900's Strand Antique Touring Skis

Martin Strand started making skis in his home Minneapolis Minnesota in 1896 while working as a surveyor and insurance salesman. Martin partnered with business associate Frederick Youngquist in 1904 and they formed the Strand-Youngquist Manufacturing Company where they made skis, boat oars, and toboggans. Their business partnership dissolved in about 1907, but Strand continued to make skis. This Norwegian telemark style of ski was really popular in the early days of the sport. In 1910 after two fires he moved his operations to New Richmond Wisconsin. Strand filled for bankruptcy in 1948.

This is a really nice example of the early telemark style of skis and are in great condition for their age. These skis have a mortise but have been retrofitted with a newer binding. These give a new meaning to long boards.

Northland Ski Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1912 by Ole S. Ellevold, former foreman of the Strand Ski Company. In 1913, Norwegian born Christian A. Lund became associated with the business through purchase of stock. In 1916, Christian Lund owned most of the stock of the company and Ellevold was forced out. In the 1920s and early 1930s Northland published some of the first U.S. how-to-ski pamphlets printed in the U.S. Northland skis soon gained a widespread reputation for unsurpassed quality making Northland the largest manufacturer of skis in the world. 1958 Paris Post Korean War Army Skis with Bear Trap and Cable Bindings, Size - 7' long. 1958 Paris Cold Weather Troops Army Skis

1958 Paris Cold Weather Troops Army Skis

Henry Lucilla Morton Paris started making sleds in 1861and there son Will would paint them. Finnish immigrants inspired the Paris Manufacturing Company to enter the ski business in 1900. At the time Paris was a large woodworking firm that specialized in sleds and other children's toys, and skis were a natural extension of their core business.

These skis were made for the ski troops shortly after the Korean War. Sometimes I feel like these skis were stamped with the wrong date but I am not sure. These have the same bindings as skis from 15 years earlier.
