Snurfers came to market in the mid 1960s, and for the next 20 years the sport of snowboarding developed into something that resembles more what we know today. While not the first snowboarding competition in history, the 1984 Snowboard Masters at the now-defunct Berthoud Pass Ski Area was the "richest" for its time, giving away large amounts of prize money to winning snowboarders for one of the first times ever.
