Wayne Wong White Stag Vintage Ski Poster
Remember this 1970s favorite poster of Wayne Wong - Skiing the 'Wong Way'? For those of you too young to remember - Wayne was an icon in Freestyle Skiing back in the 70's. He is sporting his favorite Red, White and Blue K2 Comps. As Skiing Magazine's 1972 Freestyler of the Year, he was the poster child of the emerging hot-dog attitude. A year earlier he had taken third place at the Waterville National Exhibition, and his image - the white glasses and toothy grin, deeply tanned face, black mop of hair - was everywhere, in magazines and even in a nationally aired Pepsi commercial.
On April 16, 2009, Wong was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame for his impact on skiing's culture. He still sports that signature smile on his face, while also bringing a smile to those around him.
The White Stag company began as an offshoot of the Hirsch-Weis Manufacturing Company of Portland, Oregon, which made durable outdoor clothing and supplies worn by loggers, mill hands, and stockmen.
For 38 years a sign in Portland advertised White Stag Sportswear. In 1929, Harold S. Hirsch, Max's 21-year old son, returned to Portland after graduating from Dartmouth College, where he had been a member of the school's ski team. He began making downhill skiing apparel, starting with a ski suit, which Hirsch-Weis began marketing in 1931 as White Stag.
Skiing, then in its infancy in the United States, was becoming popular in Oregon in the 1930s, and White Stag grew quickly. In 1956, reflecting the popularity of the sportswear line, Hirsch-Weis changed its name to White Stag.
In 1966, White Stag was purchased by the Warner Brothers Company, which later became the Warnaco Group. The company moved its operations out of its downtown Portland building in the 1970s and by 1986, had moved out of Portland completely. White Stag is now sold at Wal-Mart, what a change!
