Description

For seekers of steeps and stashes at the four resort mountains of Aspen/Snowmass, Neal Beidleman’s new “Aspen Ski and Snowboard Guide” provides a worthy companion.

Beidleman, an Aspen native and accomplished skier and climber, crams into 144-waterproof, color pages a ton of beta about the in-bounds expert and advanced terrain at Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk. All told, the boundaries hold more than eight-a-half square miles of bowls, gullies, chutes and regular old trails.

In the style of guides in Europe and elsewhere in North America where complex and nuanced terrain exists, Beidleman’s guide features route descriptions for all named runs (and 150-plus shots not listed on trail maps). There’s also action photos, photo-illustrations and aerial photos that should help the uninitiated decipher maze-like places such as the Hanging Valley Wall at Snowmass.

Beidleman dedicates the book to his brother, Keith Glen Beidleman, “who was killed clearing trails for the gondola installation in 1986 (on Aspen Mountain),” according to the trail description for Keith Glen found on page 29. Historical and anecdotal riffs are woven in throughout to provide narrative depth to the traditional blow-by-blow, guide-style bent of the book. Highly recommended, terrific gift for that Aspen skier -- or dreamer.

Compact size skiing guide book (6 x 4 1/2 inches) is perfect for outdoor use.
